Mexico Outdoor Adventure Travel

From November to March, time in which the Monarch butterflies hibernate in the fir tree forests of the State of Mexico and Michoacán, “La Sierra Lake & Mountain” organizes hikes in the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary of Piedra Herrada in the State of Mexico.

For those not wanting to walk in this high altitude mountainous area, local criollo horses, owned by peasants of the local comunities are available to make the hike up to the butterfly sanctuary.

Each year the Monarch butterflies return to the high altitude mountains of this region.  They come from the Eastern side of Canada and the United States.   They fly between 4,000 and 5,000 thousand kilometers just in time to celebrate the traditional “fiesta” of the Day of the Dead.  An old legend tells that these butterflies are the souls of dead people coming back to visit their beloved ones. From 60 to 90 million Monarchs arrive each year to the same sites.

This activity is open to people of all ages that consider themselves fit to make a hike up the mountain or is willing to make a short horse ride.  This is a must during the time that the Monarchs are here!
